Chiropractic Techniques Practiced

Gonstead

The Gonstead Concept of chiropractic begins with a basic biomechanical principle of physics. Every engineer, architect, builder and carpenter knows the importance of a proper foundation in constructing a building, for this insures durability and long life. Any slight change or shift in the foundation can cause a great amount of deviation in the top part of the structure and, perhaps, ultimately, its collapse.

The body’s foundation is formed by the pelvic girdle. When this bony structure consisting of hip bones and the lower bones of the back is level, there will be maximum balance and stability in the spinal column. When the pelvic girdle or any of the vertebrae (bones making up the spinal column) become tilted or rotated out of their proper position, dramatic changes may occur in the body.

These misalignments can cause pressure on the discs that separate the vertebrae. (The condition of the disc is the key to the patient’s health problem in many cases.) Vertebra can become misaligned either from the cumulative effects of several minor episodes or from a single accident. Nature frequently is able to cope with these jolts to the spinal column without assistance. Sometimes, though, vertebrae tilted or rotated out of their normal position can be too much for nature to deal with effectively.

In order to more fully understand what occurs, we should know that the discs are really pads between the vertebrae and consist of a spongy substance surrounded by fibers of cartilage. When there is misalignment of a vertebra, there is uneven pressure on the disc causing it to swell and protrude. (One often hears this referred to as a slipped, herniated or ruptured disc.)

These compressed nerves often become inflamed and impede the proper transmission of impulses to the section of the body controlled by these nerves. The ability to recognize and correct these misalignments forms an integral part of the Gonstead Concept. For complete and lasting results, all of the misaligned vertebrae must be identified and then a program can be initiated to restore them to their normal position. Every chiropractic case presents a different combination of misaligned vertebrae.

Atlas Orthogonality or Atlas Orthogonal

Atlas Orthogonal is a spinal healthcare program developed by Dr. Roy Sweat in the late 1960’s based on scientific and biomechanical procedures. Dr. Sweat is considered by many to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on the cervical spine. After years of extensive research he developed a non-invasive, precision instrument to restore structural integrity from cervical vertebral malposition. The percussion instrument achieves postural restoration without manipulation or surgery. This precision treatment reduces cervical spine misalignment and its related symptomatology.

This method is so gentle that many patients cannot believe an adjustment has actually taken place until they notice that their function has improved and their discomfort has been relieved.  Atlas Orthogonal is a gentle, effective and proven Chiropractic technique that does not utilize physical manipulation.  The Atlas is the top vertebrae of the spine and supports the head.  Orthogonal means at right angle to or square. If the Atlas is not square to the head and spine (referred to as subluxated) then the head and spine are by necessity out of alignment . Essentially if the head is not on straight then the spine cannot possibly be straight. The resulting stress that ensues may cause discomfort to the back, shoulders, pelvis, hips, knees and ankles.

A normal Atlas is aligned squarely with both the spine and skull. A misaligned or subluxated Atlas is not square.  The adjusting instrument is a safe, gentle, and precise method of correcting a misaligned (subluxated) Atlas vertebrae, without physical manipulation.  The stylus delivers a precise impulse to the exact area needed as determined by X-rays.  Watch a short video further describing the instrument and adjustment here.  We also have videos from the official Atlas Orthogonal Technique site.

*When most people think of chiropractic adjustments, they think of neck pain, back pain, or muscle aches. The Atlas Orthogonal Spinal Correction can help your body work better no matter what type of health problem you may have. Our organization is dedicated to correcting the Atlas Subluxation Complex which is a misalignment of the bone structure of the head and neck. This misalignment can block the communication between your brain and body causing pain, stress, and tension. This stress and tension can affect all physical and even mental activity of the body. Many symptoms can be relieved by correction of the Atlas Subluxation Complex. We have had positive results with such conditions as:

• Neck Pain
• Headaches and Migraines
• Upper Back Pain  (across the shoulders to the mid back)
• Fibromyalgia
• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Arthritis
• Asthma
• Chronic Pain or Stress
• Athletic injuries
• Neurological Problems
• Scoliosis
• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Seizures, including Epileptic
• Leg and arm numbness
• Sinus problems
• Allergies
• Dizziness
• Bell's Palsy
• Sciatica
• Vertigo and Dizziness

Activator Methods

Evolved from 35 years of empirical study and 15 years of clinical research, the Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique (AMCT) uses the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic examinations to seek joint dysfunction in the spinal column and extremities for improved patient care.  AMCT uses the Activator Adjusting Instrument to give consistent low-force, high-speed chiropractic adjustments. Over 35,000 doctors have been trained in AMCT and 2,100 doctors are Proficiency Rated, making AMCT the most widely used technique worldwide; a testament to low force patient satisfaction.

What makes the Activator Method Technique different?

Restoring your spinal health and body mechanics safely and effectively, has been the compelling goal behind the Activator Method. This technique utilizes specific procedures to detect spinal joint dysfunction, analyze leg length inequality, detect body mechanics problems and test neurological reflexes. With these unique analytical tools, we can begin the process of restoring your overall spinal balance.  To address spinal joint dysfunction, we use an instrument called the Activator. This unique hand-held instrument was scientifically designed to give you a very specific, "low force" adjustment. The Activator instrument delivers a controlled, light and fast thrust, without causing undue strain to patients.  Activator adjustments are so quick and controlled, your body's muscles are less likely to resist, allowing for a more precise and exact adjustment.

Thompson

Dr Justin was taught Thompson technique from Dr Ken Randolph DC nephew of the founder of Thompson Technique, Dr Clay Thompson. The Thompson Technique utilizes a "Segmental Drop Table" to enhance the motion force imparted towards the segment or area to be Adjusted. Dr. Clay Thompson introduced the concept of adding motion by inventing a headpiece that would drop away as the adjustive thrust was applied to the vertebral segment. He was granted a patent in 1955 on his concept and thusly was born the Thompson drop headpiece. Since the new idea was such a success Dr. Clay then went on to invent a table with drop pieces for adjusting the dorsal, lumbar and pelvic area. This came about in 1957 and from there the rest is history. Today the Thompson drop-piece table from numerous manufacturers is the most widely used Chiropractic table around the world.

The "Segmental Drop System" takes advantage of the spine's inherent design of the joints in order to move the spinal segment in the direction that will improve the motion of the segment with the one above and below. The majority of the spinal adjusting utilizing the Thompson Technique has the patient lying prone. (face down.) This is the basis for Dr. Clay's theory of proper spinal adjusting and the driving force that lead him to invent the drop table.

Another important aspect of the Thompson Technique is the method used to determine an imbalance in the length of the legs when observed with the patient in a prone position on the table. The "Leg Length System" is based on the work of Dr. Derifield along with Dr Thompson. An imbalance will affect the musculature of the legs resulting in the appearance of one leg being short when observed with the patient in the prone position.

The "Leg Length Analysis" has five levels of interpretation. The length is observed at the juncture of where the heel and shoe come together with inversion and eversion removed and no dorsiflexion or plantar flexion of the feet.
